Forest Gump essays Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what youre gonna get. This is probably the most popular quote from Forest Gump. It simply states how Forest felt about life. He lived his life according to his values. Three of the important values that he lived by were being non-judgmental, helping people, and loyalty. Forest Gump faced many obstacles in his life, but he still stayed strong, and he became the best person he could be. The first value that Forest Gump lived by was being non-judgmental and accepting people for who they are. Jenny had a lot of faults and was not always there for Forest, but he never gave up on her. She was always coming and going out of his life, but he was always there when she came back. Bubba, one of Forests friends, was of a different race and background, but Forest accepted him without even looking at those things. Lt. Dan, another friend, was not an easy person to get to know and get close to, but Forest was still his friend. Forest always took the positive with the negative. He showed this value in accepting his own limits and his strengths. The second value that Forest Gump lived by was helping others. Jenny had problems at home, and at nights, she would come over to Forests to sleep. He would always let her stay with him. He never asked what was wrong at her home, but he knew she needed him, so he let her stay, because he knew he was protecting her. When Forest was in the war, and they were being bombed, he was determined to save anyone he could. He ran back and forth rescuing fellow soldiers. Lt. Dan was handicapped from the war and became very depressed. He did not feel like living anymore, but Forest became his friend and helped him to overcome his disabilities and enjoy life. Freud and Happiness essays Born in 1856 in a small European town, Sigmund Freud would grow to be one of the most important thinkers in recorded history. From a young age, he attempted to understand the human mind and explain its tendencies. In doing so, he successfully managed to make countless enemies and critics. His ideas in response to the puzzles of human existence often conflicted with those of his audience, and I am in this number. In his novel Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud presents theories on happiness, none of with which I agree. Freud describes happiness, understood by us as pleasure, as everyones main goal in life. According to Freud, all humans strive after happiness; they want to become happy and remain so(25). Mankind struggles in everything to avoid feelings of displeasure and pain while attempting to experience feelings of joy and delight. Freud named this concept the pleasure principle, and he thought it to be the gist of life. I, on the other hand, do not believe that the pleasure principle is everyones driving force. First of all, people have different goals in life, starting with the most basic goal of survival. Besides that, though, people seek love, praise, wealth, and reproduction. However, different people do not hold these goals in equal esteem because no one is the same. Secondly, the need for happiness is important, but not vital. We can survive if we are not always experiencing pleasure, but for some individuals, sterility is devastating, and for others, the loss of love can lead to suicide. Freud believed that the pleasure principal is prevalent in humans at all times but can never be satisfied. He said that the principle dominates the operation of the mental apparatus from the start(25). Right when we are born, the pleasure principle is working inside of us. In those days, knights were real warriors accorded respect and honor by the subjects of the king. However, soon the king came to knowledge of what he had done. The knight had miscalculated his chances of getting away w ith the crime he had committed2. King Arthur did not intend to spare him from the decapitation that awaited him because of his act. However, the queen made a suggestion to the king. She intended to save the knight’s life. However, she demanded that the knight had to indulge in interviews and provide an answer the inquiry that queen would pose. The queen ordered the knight to find out what women desired most. His life would be safe if he established the right answer to the inquiry. However, if his venture proved a failure, he would face decapitation. The knight embarked on a journey to different parts of the land seeking to establish the one desire that a woman would do anything to have fulfilled. For some time, his venture was proving unsuccessful because different women had varying answers for his inquiry3. However, knowing that finding the real answer was fundamental to saving his life, he did not give up but on with the search. In the end, he found an old woman, who offere d to help him out. However, the woman was not pleasing to the eye for she was ugly and old. She offered to help but with conditions. She demanded a pledge from the knight. The knight, knowing that he had a few days left before he presented himself before the queen to provide an answer to her inquiry; he gave in to the demands of the old woman. He promised to commit himself to the old woman4. The old woman provided him with an answer that impressed the queen, saving his life. However, the knight found it hard to live up to his pledges to the old woman who gave him the right answer. However, he was indebted to her and had to marry her. However, after the marriage, it was difficult for him to accept that he going to live the rest of his life with the wretched woman. On realizing his state of unhappiness and displeasure, the old women inquire why the knight was in this state. The knight explained that it was hard to accept the reality he was facing. The old woman gave the knight two opt ions to choose. On one side, the knight was to decide whether if he preferred a beautiful, but unfaithful wife or he wanted her to remain ugly but loyal. At this point, the knight put into application the useful information that he had gathered from the queen’s inquiry. Realizing that a woman’s greatest desire is having her man under her control, he gave her the freedom to choose what she preferred to become to her man.
